Chemistry Vocabulary: Building Blocks of Matter
Chemistry is the study of matter β its composition, structure, properties, and transformations. Every material around you, every drug you take, every food you eat, has been explained and often designed using chemical principles. Mastering chemistry vocabulary is the first step toward this understanding.
Atoms and Elements
The fundamental units of chemistry: atoms consist of protons, neutrons, and electrons, organized into elements on the periodic table. Each element has unique chemical properties determined by its electron configuration.
Chemical Reactions
When substances transform into new substances by breaking and forming chemical bonds. Reaction types include combustion, synthesis, decomposition, and acid-base neutralization β governed by conservation of mass.
Bonding
Atoms join through ionic bonds (electron transfer), covalent bonds (electron sharing), or metallic bonds (delocalized electrons). The type of bonding determines a substance's properties: melting point, solubility, and reactivity.
Acids and Bases
Acids donate protons (HβΊ); bases accept them. The pH scale measures HβΊ concentration logarithmically: below 7 is acidic, above 7 is basic. Buffer systems maintain pH in blood, oceans, and industrial processes.
