Algebra Vocabulary: Key Terms Explained

Algebra is the branch of mathematics dealing with symbols and rules for manipulating those symbols. Mastering algebra vocabulary is the first step to solving equations, graphing functions, and understanding higher-level mathematics.

Variable

A letter representing an unknown quantity in an equation. Variables like x, y, and z are the foundation of algebraic thinking — they let us write general rules that apply to many specific cases.

Equation

A mathematical statement asserting equality between two expressions. An equation always has an equals sign (=) and can be "solved" to find the value(s) that make both sides equal.

Quadratic Equation

A polynomial equation of degree 2, written as ax² + bx + c = 0. Quadratics appear in physics (projectile motion), economics (profit curves), and geometry (parabolas). The quadratic formula always works: x = (−b ± √(b²−4ac)) / 2a.

Function

A mathematical rule where each input produces exactly one output, written f(x). Functions model real-world relationships: f(x) = 1.15x could represent the total cost including 15% tax on any purchase x.

Slope and Intercept

In the line y = mx + b, m is the slope (steepness) and b is the y-intercept (where the line crosses the y-axis). A positive slope rises left to right; a negative slope falls. These concepts underpin linear modeling across all sciences.

Polynomial

An expression of one or more terms involving variables with non-negative integer exponents. Polynomials can be classified by degree (highest power): linear (degree 1), quadratic (2), cubic (3), and so on.

Factoring

Breaking an expression into a product of simpler factors. Factoring is essential for solving quadratics, simplifying fractions, and finding zeros of polynomial functions. Key technique: x² − 9 = (x+3)(x−3).

Domain and Range

The domain is the set of valid inputs for a function; the range is the set of possible outputs. For f(x) = √x, the domain is x ≥ 0 (no square roots of negatives), and the range is all non-negative numbers.

Why Learn Algebra?

Algebra is the gateway to all higher mathematics and countless career fields. It teaches logical, systematic thinking — the ability to set up and solve problems methodically. From calculating loan interest to designing software algorithms, algebraic reasoning appears everywhere in modern life.

Students who master algebra vocabulary tend to perform better in geometry, statistics, calculus, and physics. Each term in this crossword represents a concept you will encounter repeatedly throughout your education and career.
