Medieval Times: The Age of Castles, Crusades, and Cathedrals
The Middle Ages (c. 500β1500 CE) were far from the 'Dark Ages' of popular myth. Medieval Europe developed feudalism, built magnificent cathedrals, produced brilliant philosophy and literature, and laid the foundations for modern nation-states, universities, and legal systems.
Feudalism and Society
The feudal system organized medieval society in a hierarchy of lords and vassals β kings granted land to nobles, who granted it to knights, who in turn provided military service. Peasants (serfs) worked the land.
The Church and Faith
The Catholic Church was the dominant institution of medieval Europe β controlling education, morality, and politics, building soaring Gothic cathedrals, and launching Crusades to recapture the Holy Land.
Knights and Warfare
Knights were armored cavalry who swore oaths of loyalty and supposedly followed the code of chivalry. Castles, siege weapons, and mounted combat defined medieval warfare.
The Black Death
The bubonic plague (1347β1351) killed one-third to half of Europe's population, disrupting feudalism, empowering surviving peasants, and transforming art, religion, and society in ways that helped end the Middle Ages.
